Some new and incredibly exciting wines, with a distinctly French
leaning
In my gobby opinion the wines
listed below are fantastic and I am ridiculously confident in how lovely they
are. Now you could take my word for it which is fine or you can let your taste
buds decide before you spend. In other words if you want to taste any of the
five wines below then just ask when you call in and we’ll be more than glad to
enjoy a glass or two with you.
NEW! Domaine de Grezan Chardonnay Antique 2008
£11.99 or £60 for 6
This is just absolutely stunning
wine and if it said Puligny-whatnot on the label then you would be looking to
pay a lot more for this level of wow factor. This is lush, rich Chardonnay with
perfect acidity from its youthfulness yet a weight of flavour which is as
delightful as it is surprising.
Structured, brooding and powerful
this is seriously classy red wine. I tried this on Tuesday morning and it was
lovely, on Tuesday night it was even better and by Wednesday evening when I
drank the last glass I was left yearning for another bottle. (Don’t think that
I only drank one glass of wine that night, I had two glasses of the above
Chardonnay to start and then half a bottle of Ripasso Valpolicella after the
Faugeres. It’s just work, work, work.) What this wine would really like for
Christmas is some game so if you’ve shot or run over anything interesting
recently then do it proud and serve it alongside this.
This wine is just absolute heaven,
I’ve enjoyed this with roast chicken, roast beef, knockout Thai takeaway and
even just while indulging in guilty viewings of various Saturday night reality
shows. It is absolutely awash with flavour so I know that this will divide
opinion between those who adore it and those that think I’m bonkers. The only
way to find out how you will feel about it is to come in and try it. So do just
that come in and ask to try it and
if I haven’t already opened a bottle for breakfast then I’ll draw a fresh cork
and you can decide for yourself. By the way it isn’t sweet and it isn’t German.
The above two white wines are big
and rich and demand your instant attention, sometimes though you just want a
little more subtlety. This Loire Valley Sauvignon has a welcoming citrus fruit
nose and the palate also has that grapefruit for breakfast freshness but, and
this is the important part, there is a little plump to the palate. This means
that the wine doesn’t become an acidity bore-fest. as it has that magical
ingredient of texture.
Not a completely new wine but a
new vintage and it’s such a great bottle of wine and such a firm favourite that
I can’t help but mention it at every chance. Soft and warming without the usual
rustic weight of syrah led Minervois. Roland Coustal has again produced the
perfect cold weather red and it’s what I would affectionately term a great two
bottler.
